A Field Guide to the Raptors of Asia: Sedentary Raptors of Oriental and East Asia

After the completion the first volume of Asian raptors in 2012, ARRCN board members discussed and made the decision to publish the second volume of the book, A Field Guide to the Raptors of Asia: Sedentary Raptors of Oriental and East Asia for the dedication to the 20 years anniversary of the ARRCN.

The main objective of the book is to promote the Asian raptor research and conservation actions and activities for both Asian and global society of raptors. A total of 94 species of raptors considered as sedentary status included in this book. The sedentary raptors mean true non-migratory in most countries and nomadic status in some countries in Oriental and East Asia. Very few raptor species with the status of migratory in some countries and resident status of the same species in other countries included in this book.

This book covers species names in Latin and English, body measurements (body length, wingspan, tail length and body weight), distribution, habitat, food and foraging behavior, breeding ecology, density, home range, movement, threats and conservation, degree of data and reliability, and data sufficiency of 94 species of sedentary raptors.

We have used the IUCN category for each species status. These include Data Deficient (DD), Least Concern (LC), Near Threatened (NT), Vulnerable (VU), Endangered (EN), Critically Endangered (CR) and Extinct in the Wild (EW).

Images of each species are very helpful for field identification and also important to determine the sex and age of these species. Due to the lack of images of some species on small islands and isolated remote areas, we could not find high-quality images for every single species of raptors in this book. We believe that wildlife photographers and raptor biologists can fill the gap of the images for these species.

All compilers and editor of the book and authors of the species text hope that this publication will be the significant reference for Asian raptor research and conservation works near future.
