“I am very grateful for the privilege to be part of Hustai National Park family, and in particular I am very proud of our biologists that produced this beautiful book. The second edition already: an invitation to visit Hustai and enjoy its wonders.” reviews Piet Wit, Chairman of Commission on Ecosystem Management of IUCN, Board Member of Hustai National Park Trust.
Hustai National Park is known both within Mongolia and worldwide. The park is not only renowned for its successful reintroduction of Takhi or Przewalski’s horse, the last living species of wild horse in the world; Hustai has also become famous for its research on the biology of Przewalski’s horse and wider research programmes on the mountain steppe ecosystem and its biodiversity. This attracts many people to Hustai. In addition, uniquely, the park is the only protected area in Mongolia which is managed by NGO – the Hustai National Park Trust.
As a consequence of research done over the years, 223 species of birds of 119 genera, 43 families, and 17 orders have been registered in Hustai National Park. This represents over half of the bird species found in Mongolia and 210 of the species found in Hustai are represented in this book. 7 species are registered on Appendix I of CITES, 31 species on Appendix II of CITES, and 11 species are assessed as a threatened category of IUCN Red List, making Hustai National Park a vital area for bird species.
