Many countries around the world have been celebrating World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) since 2006 with the purpose of raising public awareness of the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. Each year, on the second weekend in May, people around the world take action and organize public events such as bird festivals, education programs, exhibitions and bird-watching excursions to celebrate WMBD.
Birdwatching trip organized at the Swan lake located in the outskirts of the city Ulaanbaatar last year.
With the theme “Energy – make it bird-friendly!”, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2015 aims to highlight the importance of deploying energy technologies in a way that prevents, minimizes and mitigates impacts on migratory birds and their habitats. This campaign is organized by two international wildlife treaties administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA).
Since 2011, Mongolian Ornithological Society in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Green Development and Tourism, National University of Mongolia and other NGOs and private sectors began to celebrate the event in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Since the first celebration, the organizations have been subsequently organizing the day with the involvement of school children, students, bird enthusiasts and professionals in the country.
