National report on the convention on wetlands of international importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat Ramsar Convention
Mongolia joined the Convention on April 8, 1998, and has been fulfilling its obligations and participating in the convention’s activities ever since. Currently, there are 11 wetlands in Mongolia which have been designed as Ramsar sites: Mongol Daguur (1997), Valley of the Lakes (1998), Ogii lake (1998), Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake (1998), Airag Lake (1999), Khar-Us Lake (1999), Achit Lake and its surrounding wetlands (2004), Buir Lake and its surrounding wetlands (2004), Ganga Lake and its surrounding wetlands (2004), Uvs Lake and its surrounding wetlands (2004), and Lakes in the Khurkh-Khuiten river valley (2004).
Due to ongoing climate change, the shrinkage of wetlands and water bodies has been intensifying and has become a concern not only for governmental organizations but also for individuals. With this report, the authors are presenting the main findings of their analysis of the state of the wetlands both present and past, which have been designated as Convention sites.
